As part of the BIG Challenge, the agriculture and food sector participates with many teams in the annual event Alpe d'HuZes; conquering the French mountain Alpe d'Huez by bike or on foot. The goal is to raise as much money as possible for cancer research.
BIG Challenge
Cancer is a disease that affects 1 in 3 people and has significant consequences for family members, friends, and colleagues. That's why around 200 cyclists and (hard) runners from the agriculture and food business, under the banner of BIG Challenge, tackle Alpe d’Huez as many times as possible in early June during Alpe d’HuZes. The aim: is to raise as much money as possible for research into living a good, happy, and healthy life with cancer.
Pig farmers, dairy farmers, calf farmers, poultry farmers, goat farmers, arable farmers, horticulturists, veterinarians, advisors, and researchers from the Netherlands, Belgium, and various other countries are working tirelessly with BIG Challenge to put an end to the misery and helplessness that cancer causes in our society.
Harold Korsten, the board member, says, "Giving up is not an option, just as it isn't for a cancer patient. Participating is an experience for a lifetime; give yourself that gift for the rest of your life." He also encouraged family members to join because it's impossible to explain what participants go through.
Goal for 2024
Herman Houweling started BIG Challenge in 2009. Since that year, the agricultural sector has raised over €12.5 million for cancer research, making it the second-largest fundraiser for the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). In addition to raising a lot of money for KWF, another goal of BIG Challenge is to enhance pride and solidarity in the agricultural sector, demonstrate social involvement, and promote the agricultural sector to a wide audience. The goal is to raise €1,000,000 by 2024, all of which will go to KWF Cancer Research. BESTMIX Software is happy to contribute with sponsorship and wishes all participants great success, enjoyment, and fulfillment.
Give yourself that gift for life
There are always reasons not to participate: no time, no money, too busy, but turn helplessness into strength and give yourself that gift for life. People with cancer have only one goal: to get better. If you can contribute to that and celebrate life, do it! Participants can cycle, run, or walk up the mountain. Family members and supporters can volunteer. The number of registrations is approaching one hundred. There is still room for additional participants and teams.
